Parliament speaker accepts Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation; new President to be elected within 7 days

Parliamentary speakers in the Sri Lanka crisis have received a resignation letter from the President of Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the speaker said on Friday. He added that the new president would be elected within seven days in accordance with the constitutional provisions, the Daily Mirror Lanka reported the speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywarda.

The protesters emptied the government buildings on Thursday in Sri Lanka as President of Rajapaksa who was fought finally sent an email resignation that had been sought by demonstrators for months. The resignation occurred a day after President Gotabaya fled the country with his wife, first to the Maldives and then to Singapore.

Although Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who has served as the Acting President, has announced the curfew after storming his office by the protesters for the past two days, the crowd of people who were happy to gather on the streets to celebrate the resignation of President Gotabaya.

The protesters who had invaded the government buildings, including the residence of the president and the PM office, in the past week, emptied them, saying they did not want to damage public property, who followed Sri Lanka military forces to move to strengthen security. Parliament will meet on Saturday. The newly elected president is likely to appoint a new prime minister, who must then be approved by the parliament.
