Covid Cluster At Japan Hotel Hosting Brazilian Olympians

Tokyo: At least eight staff at the Japanese hotel which hosted the Brazilian Olympic Judo team had tested the positive Coronavirus, said local officials on Thursday.
Health and sports officials in the city of Hamamatsu, West Tokyo, said the virus playback was carried out before the judo delegation was around 30 members arrived there on Saturday.

None of the infected individuals touch the athletes, they said.

The news came when Tokyo prepared to host the Olympics mostly behind closed doors, with strict anti-infection steps placed on athletes, officials and journalists.

“Only those who have evidence of a negative test that works” with the Judo team, said Yoshinobu Sawada, a sports official in the city.

“We explained to the team that only (healthy workers) were in bubbles. We think they have understood the situation and steps of our infection,” he told AFP.

A family member of one of the infected hotel workers also tested positive officials, Hamamatsu added.

Tokyo is currently under the state of the emergency virus, with infection soaring. The city recorded 1,149 cases on Wednesday, the highest number since January.

Some areas around the capital are under the limitation of the looser virus.

Olympic participants will submit to strict virus rules and are stored mostly from Japanese society.

Separately, a staff member with the Russian Rugby Sevens team was hospitalized after a positive test, an official at the host they were Munakata in West Japan told AFP.

The team, consisted of 16 athletes and 10 staff members, landed at Tokyo airport on July 10, and did not have close contact with local officials or residents since then, he said.

The rest of the team is now quarantined in their accommodation, but if they test negative on Thursday, they will be able to continue training at the beginning of Friday, officially more.

The International Olympic Committee said on Wednesday that more than 8,000 people arrived between July 1 and 13, only three were tested positive after arrival and isolated.

The Chairperson of IOC Thomas Bach also promised “not to bring any risk” to Japan with the game, which is open on July 23.
